This Ancient Indian History MCQ practice paper for UPSC Prelims has 15 carefully selected questions on the Indus Valley Civilisation, the Vedic age, the Mauryas, the Guptas and ancient art and literature. Each answer comes with a simple explanation, so you can strengthen your concepts while you practise.

Why Ancient History Matters for UPSC Prelims

Ancient History looks like a very old story, but it keeps giving questions every year, either as direct questions on rulers and texts or as questions on art, architecture, religion and society. The best part is that the syllabus is limited, and the questions are conceptual. If you have a clear idea of the sequence of the periods and the key features of each one, you can answer even a twisted question. This paper will test the basics and show you your gaps.

Instructions

  • Total questions: 15. Suggested time: 15 minutes.
  • Each correct answer gives 2 marks and each wrong answer deducts 0.66 marks, as in the real Prelims.
  • Attempt the questions first and check the answer key only after you finish.

Quick Fact Sheet

  • The Indus Valley Civilisation (about 2600 to 1900 BCE) is also called the Harappan Civilisation, and its script is still undeciphered.
  • The Rigveda is the oldest Veda, followed by the Samaveda, Yajurveda and Atharvaveda.
  • Buddha was born at Lumbini, got enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, gave his first sermon at Sarnath and died at Kushinagar.
  • Ashoka's inscriptions were written mainly in Prakrit using the Brahmi script, and in the north-west also in Kharosthi, Greek and Aramaic.
  • The Gupta period saw the work of Aryabhata (mathematics and astronomy) and Kalidasa (literature).
  • The Sangam age is known for the Cheras, Cholas and Pandyas, and for the epics Silappadikaram and Manimekalai.
  • The Nalanda university flourished during the Gupta and Pala periods, and was visited by Hiuen Tsang.

How to Prepare Ancient History for the Prelims

Ancient History is a small but scoring part of the Prelims. Do not try to memorise every king. Learn the timeline, the main rulers, the sources (inscriptions, coins and literature) and the art and architecture. Make a one-page chart with the columns: dynasty, capital, famous ruler, administration and culture. Revise it every week. You can also read our free Ancient Indian History notes for simple revision, and take our other history and polity papers on the site for mixed practice.

Tricks for Solving Ancient History Questions

  • Sort by period first. If a question mentions iron or the janapadas, think of the Later Vedic period; if it mentions punch-marked coins and Magadha, think of the Mahajanapada period.
  • Link a ruler with a text or a place. Kautilya with the Arthashastra, Kalidasa with Chandragupta II, and Harsha with Banabhatta.
  • Use elimination. A Gupta-period question will rarely have an option about Buddhism being founded, as that is earlier.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mixing up the dynasty and the ruler, such as Maurya and Gupta achievements.
  • Confusing the Buddhist councils with their locations.
  • Ignoring art, architecture and literature, which are asked often.
  • Learning dates without the context of what happened and why.
