15 UPSC Prelims MCQs on government schemes with answers: PM-KISAN, PM-JAY, Jal Jeevan Mission, Jan Dhan, MUDRA, Digital India, PM Gati Shakti and more, with a sector-wise scheme table.
This UPSC Prelims practice paper on government schemes has 15 questions on the flagship schemes that are asked again and again in the Prelims and quoted in the Mains. The questions test the year of launch, the ministry, the objective and the key numbers such as the amount of benefit. Each answer has a short explanation. After the key, you will find a scheme table, a six-point method to study any scheme, and tricks to avoid confusion.
Why Government Schemes Matter for UPSC
Schemes connect governance, economy, agriculture, social justice and current affairs in one topic. In the Prelims, the UPSC asks about the objective, the beneficiaries or the implementing agency. In the Mains, schemes are used as examples of policy, with their strengths, gaps and suggestions. A student who knows the main schemes of each sector can write better answers on poverty, health, farmers and women empowerment. Always check the latest changes from the PIB or the ministry website, because schemes are often merged or renamed.
Instructions

- Each correct answer gives 2 marks and each wrong answer deducts 0.66 marks, as in the real Prelims.

A Six-Point Method to Study Any Scheme
- Launch: Year, date and place of launch if it is famous (for example, Panipat for Beti Bachao Beti Padhao).
- Ministry: The ministry that runs it, such as Jal Shakti for Jal Jeevan Mission.
- Objective: One line that explains why the scheme exists.
- Beneficiary: Who gets the benefit: farmers, women, BPL families, the unorganised sector.
- Funding: Central sector, centrally sponsored or state scheme, and the cost sharing.
- Issues and updates: Challenges, audit remarks and the latest news.
Make one flashcard or one row in a sheet for each scheme with these six points. Compare it with our notes on the Indian economy and governance for the background.
Central Sector vs Centrally Sponsored Schemes
A central sector scheme is fully funded and run by the Union government, as in PM-KISAN. A centrally sponsored scheme is run by the states but funded by the Centre and states together in a fixed ratio, as in many education and health programmes. This difference is a favourite of the UPSC.
Tricks for Solving Scheme Questions
- Link the name to the sector: "Fasal" means crop, "Jal" means water, "Awas" means housing and "Poshan" means nutrition.
- Remember the numbers in pairs: PM-KISAN: Rs 6,000 in three instalments; PM-JAY: Rs 5 lakh; Atal Pension: Rs 1,000 to 5,000; Stand-Up India: Rs 10 lakh to 1 crore.
- Watch for renamed schemes: The Mid-Day Meal became PM POSHAN, and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna was renamed in 2021. The old name may appear in the options.
How to Revise Schemes Every Week
Choose two sectors every week, read for 45 minutes and test yourself for 30 minutes. For the way to maintain current affairs notes, read our current affairs routine, and use the reports and indices practice paper for the next test.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Learning only the names: Know the objective and the beneficiary too.
- Mixing the launch years: Many schemes were launched in 2014 to 2016, so write the years in a timeline.
- Ignoring the ministry: A question may ask which ministry runs the scheme.
- Using outdated numbers: Check the latest benefit amount and coverage.
