Questions on the largest, longest, highest, smallest and deepest features of India and the world are among the most common static GK questions in SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS, GD, railway (RRB NTPC, Group D), bank, defence and state PCS exams. In UPSC Prelims, these facts form part of geography questions on rivers, mountains and lakes, and of infrastructure questions on bridges, tunnels and dams. This note groups the most important superlatives under clear headings, adds short explanations to help you remember them, and points out common traps, such as the difference between the longest river "in India" and the longest river "flowing only within India".

6. Explanations Behind Key Facts
Why Kangchenjunga and Not K2?
K2 (8,611 m), the second-highest mountain in the world, lies in the Karakoram range in Gilgit-Baltistan, which is part of the Union Territory of Ladakh as claimed by India but administered by Pakistan. Official Indian maps show K2 within India's territory, and some textbooks therefore name K2 (also called Godwin-Austen) as India's highest peak. However, most exam keys and government sources list Kangchenjunga as the highest peak in India because it is within India's actual administration, on the Sikkim-Nepal border. If both appear in options, read the question carefully; when it asks for the highest peak "in India" in SSC-style questions, Kangchenjunga is the safer answer unless K2 is clearly intended.
Ganga and Godavari
The Ganga is the longest river flowing through India, running about 2,525 km from Gangotri glacier to the Bay of Bengal. The Brahmaputra is longer in total (about 2,900 km), but most of its length lies in Tibet and Bangladesh, so it is not the longest within India. Among peninsular rivers, the Godavari (about 1,465 km) is the longest and is called "Dakshin Ganga". The Narmada and Tapi are the main west-flowing rivers, flowing through rift valleys into the Arabian Sea.
Engineering Milestones
India's recent infrastructure achievements are frequently asked in exams. The Chenab Rail Bridge, part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link, stands about 359 metres above the river, higher than the Eiffel Tower, and was opened in 2025. Atal Setu in Mumbai, opened in January 2024, is India's longest sea bridge and connects Sewri to Nhava Sheva. The Atal Tunnel under the Rohtang Pass, opened in 2020, provides all-weather access to the Lahaul-Spiti valley. The New Pamban Bridge, opened in 2025, connects Rameswaram island to the mainland and is India's first vertical-lift sea bridge. Such projects also appear in UPSC Mains questions on infrastructure, border connectivity and disaster-resilient design.
Majuli: A Shrinking Island
Majuli in the Brahmaputra is home to Vaishnavite monasteries called satras, founded in the tradition of the saint Srimanta Sankardeva. It became India's first island district in 2016. However, severe erosion by the Brahmaputra has reduced its area significantly over the past century, making it an important example of river erosion and climate vulnerability.
7. Common Traps
- Largest state: Rajasthan became India's largest state by area in 2000, when Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh, which had earlier been the largest. Madhya Pradesh is now second, followed by Maharashtra.
- Largest lake in the world: The Caspian Sea is the largest lake overall, but Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake by surface area.
- Longest river in the world: The Nile is usually given, though some measurements suggest the Amazon may be longer; exams generally accept the Nile.
- Largest desert: Antarctica is the largest desert overall (a desert is defined by low precipitation); the Sahara is the largest hot desert.
8. Practice Questions
- Which state has the longest coastline in India? Answer: Gujarat.
- Which is the highest peak of South India? Answer: Anamudi.
- Which is the longest dam in India? Answer: Hirakud Dam.
- Which is the largest island in the world? Answer: Greenland.
9. How to Learn Superlatives Effectively
Superlatives are easy to confuse because there are so many "largest" and "longest" facts. Organise them into four mental boxes: administrative (states, UTs, coastline, population), natural (rivers, lakes, peaks, deserts, islands), man-made (bridges, tunnels, dams, platforms, stadiums) and world. Revise one box at a time, and always note the qualifier in a fact, such as "freshwater", "by volume", "within India" or "sea bridge". Most wrong answers come from ignoring these qualifiers.
Infrastructure superlatives change often as new projects open. Keep a separate "recent records" list for bridges, tunnels, expressways and railway projects, and update it from the news every month. For example, when a new longest tunnel or bridge is inaugurated, note its name, state, length and the year it opened. These recent facts are exactly what current-affairs-heavy exams like to ask.
Finally, use a physical map. Locating Wular, Chilika, Majuli, Hirakud, Tehri and the Chenab bridge on a map of India fixes them in memory far better than reading a list, and it also prepares you for map-based questions in UPSC Prelims.
Quick recap: Rajasthan (largest state), Goa (smallest state), Ganga (longest river), Kangchenjunga (highest peak), Wular (largest freshwater lake), Chilika (largest brackish lake), Tehri (highest dam), Hirakud (longest dam) and Atal Setu (longest sea bridge). Say this list aloud once a day for a week.
